More
Updating
The computer version does not update itself yet. To update, download and install the new package the same way; it replaces the old version and your chats are kept. For the .tar.gz, run the download and unpack commands again.
Uninstalling
Unlink the computer from your phone first if it is still linked. Then run the line for how you installed it.
sudo apt remove enc-chatsudo dnf remove enc-chatrm -rf ~/EncChat ~/.local/share/applications/enc-chat.desktopWindows and Linux
Link a computer to your phone
A computer does not have an account of its own. It links to the Enc Chat account on your Android phone: the phone sends it your chats and keys, encrypted so that only that computer can open them, and from then on the computer keeps sending and receiving even while the phone is switched off.
- Set up the phone first. Install Enc Chat on your Android phone and create your account or sign in, as described on the Android page.
- Show the code on the computer. Open Enc Chat on the computer and choose Link with your phone. A code appears, and it stays valid for ten minutes; Get a new code makes another.
- Scan it with the phone. On the phone, open Enc Chat, go to Settings, then Linked devices, and tap Link a device. Point the camera at the code, and when the phone shows the computer's name, tap Link.
- Wait for your chats. Keep Enc Chat open on the phone until it says the computer is linked. The computer then opens with your chats.
Good to know
- You can link up to four computers to one phone.
- Only link computers you own. A linked computer can read and send messages as you.
- To unlink a computer, open Settings, then Linked devices on the phone and tap the unlink button next to it, or choose Sign out of this device on the computer itself. Either way the computer erases its copy of your chats.
- Signing out on the phone unlinks and erases every computer linked to it.
- The computer shows new messages while it is open; it cannot notify you while it is closed.
