Enc Chat for Windows
For 64 bit Windows 10 and 11
Choose More info, then Run anyway. Windows shows this for apps from independent developers until they are well known; it is not a virus warning. If your browser says the file is not commonly downloaded, choose Keep.
To be sure the file is genuine, compare its checksum with the one at the bottom of this page.
Install it
- Open the installer. Open EncChat setup from your browser's downloads, or from your Downloads folder.
- Click Install. It takes a few seconds and does not ask for an administrator password. Enc Chat opens by itself when it is done, and it is in your Start menu from then on.
- Link it to your phone. Choose Link with your phone and follow the linking steps below.
More
Portable version, without installing
One file you open from anywhere, for a computer where you cannot install apps or a USB stick you carry. Nothing to extract and nothing to uninstall; it does not add a Start menu entry.
Download the portable version- Keep the file. Move EncChat portable from your downloads to a folder you will find again, such as Documents, or a USB stick.
- Open it. Double click it. It unpacks itself for a few seconds, then Enc Chat opens. Your chats are kept on this computer between runs.
- Link it to your phone. Choose Link with your phone and follow the linking steps below.
Updating
The computer version does not update itself yet. To update, download the installer again and run it: it replaces the old version and your chats are kept.
Uninstalling
Unlink the computer from your phone first if it is still linked. Then open Settings, Apps, Installed apps, find Enc Chat, and choose Uninstall.
Windows and Linux
Link a computer to your phone
A computer does not have an account of its own. It links to the Enc Chat account on your Android phone: the phone sends it your chats and keys, encrypted so that only that computer can open them, and from then on the computer keeps sending and receiving even while the phone is switched off.
- Set up the phone first. Install Enc Chat on your Android phone and create your account or sign in, as described on the Android page.
- Show the code on the computer. Open Enc Chat on the computer and choose Link with your phone. A code appears, and it stays valid for ten minutes; Get a new code makes another.
- Scan it with the phone. On the phone, open Enc Chat, go to Settings, then Linked devices, and tap Link a device. Point the camera at the code, and when the phone shows the computer's name, tap Link.
- Wait for your chats. Keep Enc Chat open on the phone until it says the computer is linked. The computer then opens with your chats.
Good to know
- You can link up to four computers to one phone.
- Only link computers you own. A linked computer can read and send messages as you.
- To unlink a computer, open Settings, then Linked devices on the phone and tap the unlink button next to it, or choose Sign out of this device on the computer itself. Either way the computer erases its copy of your chats.
- Signing out on the phone unlinks and erases every computer linked to it.
- The computer shows new messages while it is open; it cannot notify you while it is closed.
Checking you got the real file
You do not have to do any of this to use the app. It is here so that a careful person can prove the file arrived intact.
